I think these Pansonic headphones are fantastic!

I think these Pansonic headphones are fantastic!
What? Are you kidding me? I paid less than fifteen dollars for these Noise Cancelling stereo earphones. Just flew 2-legs aboard a Delta CRJ-890 and a CRJ-200 (for a total of about 3 hours flight time), and I'd say these headphones are excellent - and particularly, for the money. I see businessmen & businesswomen sporting all the fancy Bose headsets, some with illuminated logos, and I shake my cost-effective Pananasonic NC headphone adorned head. This headset uses one (1) AAA battery (on the switch side) which when turned-on, illumuniates a small red LED (near the switch) and absolutely provides very much noise deadening effect. I was using an Apple iPad Mini 2 with its volume adjusted about about 80% (with some hearing loss) and I had no problem hearing voices and movie soundtracks of several movies that I enjoyed on the flights. These headphones come with a black fabric bag, with a drawstring. Not very heavy duty, but also not at all bulky. I really think these headphones are quite excellent. The foam ear cushioning-seals are also physically effective at stopping noise from infiltrating and the top of the headphone band has a black fabric-covered piece of foam to make the fit comfortable. Earphone size adjustment is via sliders (which hold their places nicely) about 4-5 inches above the earcups. The white cord is Apple-ish white color (not a hideous bright white) and the body of the headphones are aircraft interior gray color. Very nicely designed and, in my opinion, perhaps the best bang for your buck. Also, the headphone's earcups turn 90-degrees (one-way) for storage when not in use. Very clever that Panasonic didn't allow 180-degree pivoting - which would've allowed too-loose packaging. The audio cord is about 5-feet in length. The 3.5mm plug-in has a semi-flexible 90-degree plug. Very clever engineering and at a cost that you shouldn't ignore - unless you need to make a Bose statement.

Original review after purchase in June 2013:

In my opinion, these noise cancelling headphones offer one of the best cost vs quality ratios. I am on a plane at least 15 hours a month....sometime double that. On the plane is where I use these 80% of the time.

NOISE CANCELLING: They do a good job removing ambient noise, i.e. plane engine droning, air conditioner, etc...... As with most noise cancelling head phones they will not eliminate conversations right next to you electronically. But that is where the over the ear pads comes into play. Again you will be able to hear what is going on around when you don't have anything playing, but it does reduce the loudness. When you turn the noise cancelling on, it also does boost the volume, which is nice as whenever I play a movie from Google Play on my tablet the volume is always lower than anything else, so this acts an audio booster when I need it too. All of these together helps so that you do not have to turn up your music or movie up near as loud to hear over that Chatty Cathy sitting next to you or the crying baby behind you on a plane....which after several hours is a lot easier on your ears with a lower volume of music and/or movies.

Again....can Bose do a better job....no doubt, but $38 compared to $350, the difference is not worth the cost. Especially when a set of earphone breaks, stolen, or lost....which if you travel enough will happen at some time.

As far as the battery....I have yet to change it for draining a battery for straight use. The only two times I have had to change it was when I forgot to turn the headphones off.

COMFORT: I wear these as long as 6-8 hours at a time while on a plane with no lever of discomfort. I wear glasses and because of the soft foam pads they are still very comfortable. I will say that my glasses' rims are the thin style and not the thick arms that goes over the ears, but they do hook a little around the ear.

SOUND QUALITY: They are very adequate when it comes to sound quality. Here again, there is NO doubt that a $350 pair of Bose is going to have a fuller range and crispier sound quality. But again....for me, in spite of the long hours at a time, the difference is not worth the cost.

SUMMARY: If you are totally into music find yourself constantly critical of the quality of sound in your earphones, then spend the extra $300 plus, you will be a lot happier. For everyone else, this is an excellent entry level noise cancelling headset.

ADDITIONAL SUGGESTION: It comes with a soft clothe bag to store the headphones, great for keeping the cord from tangling up in your bag, but does nothing to protect them while in a bag. I bought a 7 inch tablet neoprene sleeve at MonoPrice.com for just a few bucks. The headphones fit perfectly in them...giving them a nice level of protection while still small and packable in a small carry-on bag or backpack.

Updated review after 2 years and 6 months of use (Nov 2015)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been using these headphones for 2 1/2 years now. During this time I spent over a year flying coast to coast one week out of every month. During each trip I averaged 12 to 20 hours a month in planes, which is where I use them most of the time.

DURABILITY: With constant travel for 2 1/2 years, I am still using the original set of headphones I purchased here on Amazon. The cord still is attached with no issues. Nothing has broken or cracked. This includes hours of packing them in a carry on back and all the banging around that entails. As I mentioned above, I used an inexpensive 9 inch tablet neoprene sleeve as a holder for my earphones (which if I only used the cloth bag it comes with I may have had a different long term experience)... but it has held up against the abuse of at least 38 plane rides between Seattle, WA / Baltimore, MD

QUALITY: The sound is just as good today as the first day I opened the box and the ear pads are still just as comfortable. The tension of the band is still good. No crackling sounds. Noise Cancellation works the same as when I first started using them.

CONCLUSION: My initial review above talks to the reality of the the value these headphones deliver noise cancellation and sound quality vs cost. I am now also impressed with the longevity and durability of these headphones after 2 1/2 years of constant and regular use while traveling.

I'm on my second pair of these headphones, and let me say this much: you CANNOT beat the price. I received these as a gift last Christmas, and they've been used at work every day since.

Set your expectations according to the price of these headphones, and you won't be disappointed. Flip the switch on the left side (powered by a single AAA battery), and you will notice a reduction in ambient noise. However, the actual amount of noise cancellation is minimal. At 200Hz, the RPHC200Ks reduce ambient noise by 14db. For comparison, the Bose QuietComfort QC20 in-ear noise cancelling headphones (some of the best on the market) reduce that same sound range by over 40db, according to TheWireCutter.com.

I find that these are good at cutting out the din of the office, muting distant conversations and HVAC noise. While they won't mute nearby conversations, they do dull them, and make them less distracting. So these are great for office use. If only they could cancel smells - my office neighbor likes to take off his shoes... I've used them while traveling - they do cut out a good bit of airplane noise, and I'd imagine they'd be useful in other situations as well.

They start out a little stiff, but they quickly break in to be extremely comfortable. Again, I wear these all day, every day at work, and they feel like an extension of my head. Music fidelity is pretty darned good as well.

So why four stars? First of all, my first pair of headphones snapped while in a backpack (which was easily fixed with superglue), so durability is questionable. Then after almost a year of heavy use, that same pair developed a habit of making an subtle electrical buzzing noise every once in a while, just enough to annoy me. Note that the buzzing only happened when the noise cancellation was enabled, meaning they are still perfectly functional as simple headphones.

In looking for a replacement, nothing comes close to these in terms of price. Having use these and loved these for so long, despite their quirks, I saw no other option but to buy a second pair. And if these die, I'll probably buy a third!

These are okay for an inexpensive pair of noise-canceling headphones. There is a bit of "you get what you pay for quality" to these. They do not have nearly as good noise cancelation and sound quality as a pair of $300 plus dollar headphones, and as others have said, they have durability issues. Plus, they are wired so you have to plug them into a computer, an mp3 player, etc., to listen through them. As the push has been to go more and more to Bluetooth, those are kind of a dinosaur. I would say that they are best for light use, like sitting at your desk listening to music, that sort of thing. I would not use these in a situation where you would be taking them on and off a lot, because the pads that go over your ears (which are comfortable) will split open after a while. I would say the sound quality is okay, as is the noise cancellation ability, but you definitely can still hear some ambient noise through them and the sound is not as rich as you would get in a pair of Bose headphones. But, then again, you are not paying anything near the same cost for these. So, with those qualifications, these are okay as long as you know what you are getting.

Well I bought these specifically for the noise cancelation function. Had the same pair bought quite a few years ago and was replacing them with the exact same model due to wear and tear. The N/C is non functional on these. Simply no difference between off and on. Not the case with my previous headphones. I haven't decided if I'll bother returning yet, but for the price why bother paying this much for these. I've noticed I'm not the only one to complain about this. Buyer beware.

This company basically ignored my complaint.
Fine as headphones but you can hear absolutely everything happening around you. These are absolutely not worth the money.
